Dans cet univers, Mack Murphy, ancien policier, et son associé Dehl Swift, tous deux détectives privés, vivent d’affaires minables. Mais quand Swift monte une magouille dans le dos de son associé : quelques grammes de plomb le laisseront raide mort sur le bitume. Murphy décide alors de venger son ami, tandis que l’enquête officielle est menée par le lieutenant Steer, un flic taciturne et froid. À eux deux, ils vont affronter la pègre et les gangs locaux…
