En expliquant les mécanismes du Goulag, cette série raconte son évolution à travers les destinées hors norme de nombreux protagonistes, bourreaux et victimes, personnages célèbres et anonymes, avec une alternance du commentaire en voix off et de témoignages filmés. Pour la première fois, l’histoire du Goulag est décryptée en images avec des sources documentaires souvent inédites (archives et témoignages filmés, photos, dessins, documents déclassifiés, tatouages…) et l’expertise de Nicolas Werth, historien reconnu du Goulag.
