Dario Argento est né à Rome, en Italie, le 7 septembre 1940. Il est le fils du producteur Salvatore Argento. Il a commencé sa carrière comme critique de cinéma pour le quotidien romain "Paese Sera". Scénariste professionnel à l'âge tendre de 20 ans, il rejoint Bernardo Bertolucci pour écrire le scénario de l'épopée western de Sergio Leone «Once Upon A Time In The West» en 1967.
