Homme d'État toujours en action, mais partagé entre ses certitudes et ses doutes, il fut parfois comparé à un monarque, mais a toujours placé la grandeur et l'indépendance de la France avant tout. Ce documentaire évoque la personnalité du général, homme cultivé, brillant et ayant une haute idée de sa fonction, et raconte les grands événements de son mandat, comme le putsch des généraux, la réconciliation franco-allemande ou mai 68, replacés dans le contexte d'une époque où le monde était en pleine mutation.
