Rayford Gibson, beau parleur et petit escroc, et Claude Banks, un employé de banque plutôt naïf à l'allure fière, se croisent au Spanky's Club, un club mal famé où ils ont l'un et l'autre accumulé d'énormes dettes de jeu. Bien décidé à récupérer son dû, Spanky Johnson, le propriétaire de l'établissement, leur offre de travailler pour lui et leur propose de participer à une affaire louche. Partis livrer du whisky frelaté, ils se retrouvent sur les lieux d'un crime et sont arrêtés par un policier raciste. Au cours de leur procès, le juge les condamne à perpétuité et les expédie dans une prison de l'État du Mississippi...
