Peu après son inscription dans ce même établissement, l'écrivain apprend de la bouche de la barmaid Fiona que la suite nuptiale, interdite d'accès, serait hantée par une sorcière. Quand la jeune employée disparaît mystérieusement, et que des soupçons pèsent sur un vieil homme au passé tragique vivant dans le bois voisin, Bauman ouvre sa propre enquête.
